There was so much to see in Porto, it was awesome. We had the best octopus of our lives there. Outside of our general exploring of the city, we really wanted to check out the Palácio da Bolsa. The Palácio da Bolsa is The Stock Exchange Palace and had an amazing interior with so many ornate wood details throughout. It also happened to be the only place we went to that had a mandatory guided tour, so taking deads took a little more patience/planning than normal hehe.

The Arabian Room inside the Palácio da Bolsa was CRAZY. From floor to ceiling, the details are incredible. The woodwork, the gold leaf, the painted tile, it was all so crazy. This room was built at time in Europe where having something "exotic" was all the craze, ie: The Alhambra in Granada.

Waiting in line for a bookstore is generally never in my cards but I'm so happy we got to see the interior of the Livraria Lello. I wish I'd gotten to take a dead where you could've seen more of the interior but it was JAM-PACKED with folks. It was incredible on the inside. The central staircase is a beautiful sight and I'm glad we got to walk around for a bit and admire all the details. I was also able to cop a book on Portugeuse short stories that's cover just happned to be all my favorite colors. Bonus.

I know I've complained about the hills, steps, and elevation in Porto but with the river right there look how beautiful this city is.

Evie took a dead in front of this church and I just really enjoyed how the entry way let in some light to highlight where she was lying while leaving the rest of the steps in the shadows.
If I was a better photographer, I'm sure this could've looked even cooler.

We were in Porto, so OF COURSE we went to a few places for port houses for tastings. We checked out Taylor's and Fonseca to take a tour of the grounds and grab some flights. The spots were nice enough to have some juices for Evie to taste, so she was in on the action. Anyway, close to one of the tasting rooms we found this awesome staircase where Jamielyn took this awesome dead at the bottom of it while I stayed at the top. This is one of my favorite deads from the trip.

We got to check out the MAAT (The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) and it is such a cool museum. This wasn't part of the original plan but we happened to walk past it while checking out Belém Tower. It's a former coal power station that was built in 1908 and converted into a contemporary museum. A large portion of the power station is still there and you get to walk thru and learn how it ran. Also, inside are a bunch of very nice tech and art installations. Worth a visit.

This is the front of the main art gallery building of the MAAT, it is something you really need to see in person. What an awesome piece of architecture. If you look in the background, you can see the 25 de Abril Bridge. Hey SF-OAK folks, does it look familiar? The same company that built the Bay Bridge, built this one, and on top of that they painted it the same "International Orange" as the Golden Gate Bridge hehe.

National Palace of Sintra Portugal
I don't like posting photos of just myself as the "Featured death" but the light coming thru the window shining on my dead body in this awesome looking room looks so cool. I loved how this photo turned out. Jamielyn killed it with this shot.

Sintra was going to be a day trip that was meant for castles, so we started our day super early. Our plan was to visit these places: National Palace of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira, Moorish Castle, National Palace of Pena, & Monserrate Palace. All in that order. I think we put in about 30,000 steps this day.
This photo is the Stag Room inside the National Palace of Sintra.

The Quinta da Regaleira has a lot of beautiful things to see from the garden to the chapel to the cave. We definitely went to see those but we really wanted to see the Initiation Well. An inverted tower that goes nine stories underground and has myths connected to the Knights Templar, 9 levels of Hell from Dantes' Inferno, Rosicrucianism, and more.

While wandering the grounds, we made our way to the palace wondering which royal family lived in this house... then we found out this was just some rich families summer house. A place to gather for all their other rich friends. Cool. Whatevs. No biggie.
Eat the rich.

One of the cool things we soon noticed after being in Sintra for a bit was the amount and variety of trees. Apparently, King Ferdinand II got trees from all over the world to plant in Sintra and now there are over 500 native and non-native trees covering the town. It's really something to see as you wander around, especially from a distance. You swear the air feels different.

The Moorish Castle was a little intimidating. Why you say? Both the height/elevation of the castle and the lack of walls/gates to prevent you from falling over in some parts. My butt definitely got tight in a lot of parts of this exploration lol.

The National Palace of Pena is one of the places where people ran to check if Evie was ok during the photo hehe. There was so much to see here. Of course there was a ton of the Arabic influence all over the castle but there's a "sea" theme kinda happening too with an angry Triton and coral entrance. You know how it goes when you're rich, you just start building rando stuff.

Monserrate Palace was our last stop on our Sintra castle run. By the time we got here, the sun was getting close to setting and it was closing time was soon on us. We took a tuk-tuk to get there and had to jog quickly thru the garden to make it inside. This place is ORNATE. The one thing that seemed a little weird is some of the rooms floors were redone with some basic wood flooring, which was kind of jarring because the walls and ceilings had some of the more detailed work of all the castles. It also kind of seemed like a lot of the artwork was sold and we thought maybe that was done to pay for the upkeep of the palace, but who knows.
